®: Eddie Michael Beck Fine Art 2014
By-Rose Barbara. 2008
Eddie Michael Beck is a Norwegian painter who was born in Galilee in 1957. He attended a private college ‘Terra Sancta College'. The college was directly connected to Rome in Italy; it borders several churches where one could study a large variety of paintings according to the artist.
Eddie Michael is a completely self-taught painter; unlike many painters and artists he does not have any education from any art school or academy. He has studied art on his own initiative by means of specific art literature and other media.
Having finished his education at Terra Sancta College he went for a World tour wondering around Europe starting with visiting friends and family in London for a while then he travelled on to Amsterdam where he found his dream world of art at the ‘Fantasy Factory Studios’ in Amsterdam, well-known art studios in Amsterdam. The studios were involved in different art projects for some of the main Dutch TV channels. At the same time the ‘Fantasy Factory Studios’ stood behind the biggest project and tourist attraction in the city of Amsterdam at the end of the 70s, the planning and construction of the giant figure of a Dutch farmer who was placed in Damrak right in the centre of Amsterdam. The figure was over 18 m high and was a huge tourist attraction in Amsterdam; the first week after its opening alone many tens of thousands of viewers went to see this giant. The art project in Amsterdam gave the painter a wide knowledge about general fine artistic work. Being a young man with talents for art he faced demanding challenges; already after a few artistic months at the studios he was one of the chosen artists to shape and design the giant figure with advanced painters and artists from Holland, Italy, France and many other parts of the world who were involved in this project.
Having wondered around in Holland for some time Eddie Michael was back on his tour track, first the journey went to different regions of Canada and America, a long trip where he visited family members and friends as well as a great number of galleries and experienced great admiration for the Indian Reservations, an encounter which left deep impressions on him.
He moved to Norway in the early 80s, he didn’t feel like going back to the hectic city life in Amsterdam Holland, that was it! Amsterdam was past and he decided to settle down in Norway. Per today the painter and his family live a laid-back life at the South West Coast of Norway. Norway has become his beloved home since he was in his early twenties and having lived in Norway for over 30 years he became more fascinated of his new home with every day that passes by, with the Norwegian culture, the humble and beloved Norwegian royal family, and of course, the Norwegian nature with its unique landscape formations.
Eddie Michael Beck has been unlucky with his health conditions and by the end of 2001 he has been diagnosed with a severe and very painful chronic back illness on the top of asthma and kidney problems which he had already suffered from. As a consequence, his life took completely different dimensions than what he had expected, especially when it comes to work but, as he himself says, everything happens with God’s will, and who am I to questions our Creator’s will??
Eddie Michael has painted many different paintings (oil on canvas) over a period of many years, in recent years Eddie Michael has devoted more time to his paintings than ever before. In particular in the late and sleepless nights when he wakes up from his severe back ache and to somehow fight pain he takes his painting brushes and unfolds his creativity in his little home studio. Painting and colours have a calming effect on him and his pain as the artist put it. It is then that he is listening to the silence of the night which again gives him many inspirations for his artwork. Then he is less occupied about other minor things in life and it is his creativity as a painter which becomes the essential and the important part of his daily life beside his beloved family says the artist firmly. He is never afraid to experiment with colours, this is the best teaching method, to challenge and try many different methods of painting. Sometimes it is the mistakes which teach you most; sometimes it is exactly these mistakes which prove to be the best teaching methods of all.
I am not and have never been looking for fame and glory says Eddie Michael, I paint and donate many of my paintings to charity organization, for the hungry and the poor, for the weak and the weary little ones worldwide who are the victims of our present crazy and mad world driven by selfishness and greed, each soul has the birthright to be free as the artist put it”. He is not placing himself in any art category at all. His paintings vary in style, color and painting methods. His preferred painting method, however, is portrait oil painting on canvas and wet-on-wet oil painting on canvas. His spectre comprises everything, from landscape sceneries and portraits of both ordinary and royal.
